    About the 1:1 square ratio

    1:1 is a perfect square: the original Instagram post, profile pictures, album covers and most e-commerce product photos. It looks the same on its side, so there is no portrait or landscape version.

    Pixel sizes: 1080×1080 (Instagram square), 2048×2048, 3000×3000 (a common size for music cover art), 4000×4000 (16 MP).

    Printing: 8×8, 10×10, 12×12, 16×16 and 20×20 in are square. At 300 ppi a 12×12 needs 3600×3600 px; 3000×3000 px prints 10×10 in.

    Film & cameras: 6×6 medium format (56×56 mm), shot on Hasselblad V-system and Rolleiflex twin-lens cameras, is square, and so are Polaroid and Instax Square instant prints. From a 3:2 sensor a square crop keeps about 67% of the frame.
