    About the 16:9 ratio

16:9 (1.78:1) is the shape of HD and Ultra HD television, YouTube’s player, most monitors and streaming video. Widescreen films are mastered inside it: 1.85:1 shows thin black bars, 2.39:1 “scope” shows wider ones.

Pixel sizes: 1280×720 (HD, also the YouTube thumbnail size), 1920×1080 (Full HD), 2560×1440 (QHD), 3840×2160 (4K UHD), 7680×4320 (8K).

Printing: no common photo paper is 16:9, so a 16:9 frame is either cropped to 3:2 or 4:3 or printed on a custom panoramic size — 16×9 in needs 4800×2700 px at 300 ppi. A 1920×1080 frame gives only about 6.4×3.6 in at 300 ppi.

Cameras: stills sensors are 3:2 or 4:3, so a 16:9 photo is a crop of the sensor (the 16:9 setting on most cameras and phones does exactly that). Video modes record 16:9 natively.
