    About the 4:3 ratio

4:3 (1.33:1) is the default photo shape of phone cameras and the old TV and computer-monitor standard; iPads still use it. Upright it is 3:4, which Instagram now accepts for posts (1080×1440) and uses for its profile grid.

    Pixel sizes: 1024×768, 1600×1200, 4032×3024 (the common 12 MP phone size), 8000×6000 (48 MP).

    Printing: 6×8, 9×12, 12×16 and 18×24 in are 4:3. At 300 ppi a 9×12 needs 2700×3600 px; a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024) prints about 13.4×10.1 in. A 4×6 print crops a 4:3 photo to 3:2.

Film & cameras: Micro Four Thirds sensors (17.3×13 mm) and 44×33 mm medium-format digital sensors are 4:3. On film, 645 (about 56×42 mm) is close to it and half-frame 35mm (18×24 mm) is exactly 3:4. Silent films and SD television were about 1.33:1.
